Matt Smith '01

Matt Smith attended NCCL from 1998-2001 and was there for his middle school years. After NCCL, he went back to public high school, then Towson University for a BA in International Relations (which he doesn't use but dearly loves), Duquesne University for a Masters in Health Systems Mgmt, and University of Maryland for Medical School. He finished his residency in Family Medicine and now works out in Washington State providing primary care and teaching the next generation of doctors! However, his most important roles are as father to a little boy (soon to be two little boys!) and husband.

Matt credits NCCL for his enduring love of learning and teaching! "I have so many fond memories of NCCL from apprenticing to Friday All School Meeting to building a diorama of the Tell Tale Heart in Gnomes during workshop week," Matt says. "Providing a great education isn’t easy, but making kids love it is a really amazing accomplishment that I’ve seen very rarely in other places."

Brenna Crowther '02

Brenna Crowther, Class of 2002, attended NCCL from Kindergarten through 8th grade. After attending Newark High School, she graduated with a BS in Fashion merchandising from The University of Delaware. She moved to Philadelphia after graduation in 2010, to pursue a career in retail merchandising. She has been working for Urban Outfitters Home office in Philadelphia, for the past 6 years and is currently the Senior Buyer for Women’s Shoes + Socks. She lives in Glen Mills, PA with her husband. Her favorite NCCL School memory is the Shaver's Creek Camping trip! It was "really fun to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and began my love for hiking/camping," Brenna says. "We just bought a rooftop tent for this coming Spring/Summer."

John Pilchard '07

John Pilchard, Class of 2007, Attended NCCL from kindergarten through 8th grade. After NCCL he attended the Delaware Military Academy and graduated in 2011. Upon graduation John attended Palm Beach Atlantic University where he pursued his love of film, and earned a B.A. in film production with a concentration in creative writing. Shortly after graduation, John uprooted and made the cross country trek towards Los Angeles. Since 2017 John has worked various production roles in animation working on such shows as Bob's Burgers, Central Park, Fairfax, Beavis & Butt-head, and Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Currently, John works as an art & design coordinator at Marvel Studios. When not working obscene hours, John is toiling away at his computer "writing" with the emotional support of his three legged cat, Indy.

Sophie Becker-Klein '14

Sophie Becker-Klein, Class of 2014, attended NCCL from 5th through 8th grade. She then attended Cab Calloway School of the Arts for high school, where she majored in theater and specialized in musical theatre. She is currently a senior at American University, studying environmental science with a minor in education, and interning with Freshfarm Foodprints, which is an organization that provides gardening and sustainability education at public schools around Washington, D.C. After graduation, she plans on working in the environmental education field before going to graduate school. In April, she will be kickstarting her work in the field by teaching a week-long class at NCCL about environmental issues. One of Sophie’s most memorable moments at NCCL was during the government unit. The class was roleplaying a dictatorship and she tried to stage a coup through rewriting and singing a Les Mis song. She ended up being turned into the ‘government’ by a classmate!

Johanna Chajes '10

Johanna Chajes, Class of 2010, attended NCCL from 5th through 8th grade. She then attended Cab Calloway School of the Arts for high school, where she majored in dance. After graduating from Cab in 2014, Johanna pursued a B.S. in neuroscience at the University of Delaware and graduated with an honors degree with distinction in 2018. Johanna immediately entered a developmental psychology PhD program at the University of Virginia where she studies how early life experiences impact children’s social, emotional, and brain development. She is currently planning to pursue a career in science outreach and education after she graduates. While it’s hard to pick just one, many of her favorite NCCL School memories involve nurturing her love of giving back to others, such as doing the Backpacks project during Workshop Week or sewing sensory blankets for A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children for her Big Give project.

Alejandro Lobo '18

Alejandro Lobo, Class of 2018, attended NCCL from 2nd through 8th grade. Currently a senior at Newark High School, Alejandro is involved in National Honors Society, musical theater, show choir, jazz band, cross country, and track and field. Alejandro is looking to major in Music Composition at college, and is contemplating double majoring in either exercise science or geospatial information systems. One of his favorite NCCL School memories occurred in Group 4, when he got to take his classmates down to the Phillips Park forest to film for his comedic book trailer for “The Hobbit.”

Jace Boland '19

Jace Boland, Class of 2019, attended NCCL School from second through eighth grade. He is currently a junior at Wilmington Friends School, where he is pursuing International Baccalaureate Higher Level English and Spanish. He runs both his school’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance and PRISM Magazine, the annual WFS arts publication, and is a columnist/social media manager for the school newspaper, the Whittier. Among his favorite NCCL School memories are the Trap Pond camping trips, from the sing-along van rides to class games of manhunt after dark.
